Olkhon Island
Name
The word “Olkhon” has a double translation from the language of native people Buryats. Some consider that it should be interpreted as “a small wood” – “oy-khon”. According to the second version, the name originates from the word “olkhan” which means dry. Both variants do not contradict the reality and have the right to exist: there are some forests but the majority of the island area is occupied by steppes; the precipitation is extremely low – about 200 mm a year.
